Amazon Cutting Back On Testing for Marijuana In Its Employees

  • Online retail giant Amazon has announced that they “will no longer include marijuana” in their drug screening program due to state laws beginning to favor its legalization, and will instead “treat it the same as alcohol use.”
  • Amazon also announced they will formally be joining in the support for federal marijuana legalization.
  • The company will still do comprehensive alcohol and marijuana testing after any work-related accidents. 

On Tuesday, Amazon announced that it would be cutting back on the number of workers that are tested for marijuana, and that it would instead treat pot use similar to alcohol use. 

Along with their newly-changed stance to “treat it the same as alcohol use,” Amazon is also formally joining the support for marijuana legalization and will lobby Congress for the end of federal prohibition. 

Amazon’s decision comes only a few months after many states, including New York and Virginia, legalized recreational adult-use marijuana.

“In the past, like many employers, we’ve disqualified people from working at Amazon if they tested positive for marijuana use,” Amazon posted on their company news website. “However, given where state laws are moving across the U.S., we’ve changed course.”

“We will no longer include marijuana in our comprehensive drug screening program for any positions not regulated by the Department of Transportation.”

This move by Amazon will help them expand their options for employees, as well as provide many individuals with the chance for employment despite marijuana use or convictions. 

Just a few years prior, Amazon was dealing with several lawsuits from previous employees whose employment was terminated due to medical cannabis use despite its legality and their proper documentation. However, the company has acknowledged “that this issue is bigger than Amazon.”

Amazon will still be testing for marijuana and alcohol after any work-related incident.
