A new CBD advisory panel welcomed a former chief of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) on Wednesday.
Karen Tandy, the first ever female DEA chief who served from 2003 to 2007, joined the panel made up of former government officials who are looking at the CBD industry. The new CBD advisory panel is tackling the issue of CBD regulations for the Consumer Brands Association, previously known as the Grocery Manufacturers Association, who represent consumer packaged goods companies.
Tandy, who was appointed by former President of the United States, George W. Bush, now runs a consulting business in Washington DC. When giving a statement in regard to the CBD panel, Tandy stated that regulators needed more funding in order to supervise CBD products.
“Federal regulators and law enforcement need the necessary resources to ensure any CBD that enters the marketplace is safe, regulated, and not entering through the hands of bad actors,” Tandy stated.
Experience in the Field
The list of former government officials being included in the panel continues to grow, many with years of experience dealing with these types of problems. A few other notable names on the panel are:
- Edward Davis, former commissioner of the Boston Police Department
- Mike Cornett, former mayor of Oklahoma City
- Michael Taylor, former deputy commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
Geoff Freeman, president and CEO of Consumer Brands Association, stated when announcing the panel:
“The individuals that we have assembled have decades of experience in tackling issues like the one we face today – the smart regulation of CBD.”
No timeline or plan for execution has been provided by the new CBD advisory panel yet.
