With so many products to choose from for a review, I was looking to choose one that would without a doubt provide a new and unique experience. I figured the best way to begin narrowing down my options was to choose a CBD product I had not yet tried.
Thus, my elimination process led me to CBD cigarettes.
I had originally discovered CBD cigarettes a couple of years ago when one of my friends came to me wide-eyed holding what looked like a pack of cigarettes. He showed me the image of a hemp leaf on the box and was convinced he had just bought a pack of joints from a local gas station.
Much to his disappointment, they were not joints. Instead, he had purchased a pack of hempettes; something I hadn’t been aware you could purchase at the counter of a gas station.
What Are CBD Cigarettes?
CBD cigarettes, sometimes referred to as hempettes, shouldn’t be confused with actual cigarettes. In fact, the very name “CBD cigarettes” is misleading.
A CBD cigarette is the name given to ground up smokable hemp flower that is rolled into a paper and smoked. They look similar to actual cigarettes, but have many differences.
CBD cigarettes, or hempettes, could also be called hemp joints to further clarify their contents. Below is a quick table for reference that shows the plant and primary chemical that is found in smokable products.
Cigarettes | CBD Cigarettes (Hempettes) | Joints |
Tobacco | Hemp | Marijuana |
Nicotine | CBD | THC |
Buying CBD Cigarettes
Eerily similar to the young woman who sold me CBD Living water nearly a month ago, the man working the register at the truck stop in Limestone, NY told me that the CBD cigarettes were “pretty good.”
Only this time, the transaction came with a twist: I had multiple buying options.
After briefly looking over all of my options, they all seemed one and the same. Each brand’s package featured a QR code on the back along with the proclamation of being made in the U.S.A. and containing 0% THC.
I decided to go with the hempettes made by the company Wild Hemp. I found the design of their package to be more visually appealing than my other choices. Some key highlights for Wild Hemp CBD cigarettes include:
- 20 hempettes per pack
- Approx. 75mg of CBD per hempette
- Grown in America
- Third-party tested
- 0% THC
Initial Thoughts
To be completely honest, the reason I chose Wild Hemp over my other choices was because of their package design. The CBD cigarettes came in a small box (the same size they sell cigarettes in) that featured a combination of forest green with a shiny silver. They definitely reach out and grab you from the shelf.
I was also pleasantly surprised to see that the truck stop sold the hempettes by the carton. This immediately told me that they were a popular product and therefore must have some benefits to accompany them.
I drove back home, sat on my porch, and lit up my first of several hempettes.
Pros and Cons of CBD Cigarettes
Below are 2 pros and 2 cons that I felt were relevant to share about Wild Hemp’s CBD cigarettes. Keep in mind that everyone’s senses are different, and therefore the accuracy of these statements may vary from person to person.
Pros
Taste
If you’re a fan of marijuana and the way that it tastes on your tongue, then you’ll love the taste of these hempettes. Each drag had a consistent taste that reassured you that what you were smoking was something natural.
The taste similarity to marijuana should come as no surprise with how closely-related hemp and marijuana are. And to be honest, I was really hoping (and expecting) that they would.
Cannabis has its own unique taste, so it’s easy to identify what products have been altered a lot because they will lose that signature taste. Wild Hemp definitely did well there.
Effectiveness
I must say that I’m actually quite impressed with how well these hempettes worked. If you’re somebody who deals with anxiety but finds that marijuana only exacerbates the problem, then you should consider trying CBD cigarettes.
Inhalation is one of the fastest delivery methods for getting CBD into your system. This gives it a high level of bioavailability, meaning that your body begins to feel the effects almost immediately.
After my fifth or sixth puff, I began to develop this overarching feeling of calm. I’m typically not an anxious person, but yet found myself feeling calmer with each drag that I took from the hempette. This makes it similar to a cigarette in a way, just without the harsh chemicals and carcinogens.
Cons
Price
At $12.99 per pack, it’s hard for me to justify buying these regularly. They’re more expensive than the majority of cigarettes on the market due to their lack of regulations.
The best way I could justify buying these CBD cigarettes often is if I were using them to quit smoking tobacco or vape products. Although they may be more expensive than tobacco cigarettes, it’s hard to put a price tag on your health and well-being.
Smell
It tastes like weed, so it should smell like it too, right?
Wrong.
Don’t hold your breath waiting for that signature skunky smell to fill the air. In fact, the smell of these hempettes actually closer resembles that of cigarettes. If you’re in the process of trying to wean off of them, then this may help you feel like you’re getting the real experience.
However, if you’re someone who used to smoke and then quit (or never smoked to begin with), the smell can be turn off. It will quickly stick to your clothes and hands, so be prepared for that before trying one.
Overall Rating
⭐⭐⭐
Overall, I’m giving Wild Hemp’s CBD cigarettes 3 out of 5 stars.
I was most impressed with how well these hempettes worked. They could potentially make a great addition to someone’s morning and nightime routine if they’re looking for a good way to relax before going to bed or work.
However, I’m not sure I would recommend these for anyone looking for a long-term remedy. The price of these will likely add up in your budget quickly, especially with how many you could potentially use when substituting them for cigarettes.
At $12.99 per pack and $124.99 per carton, the choice is ultimately yours.
Things to Know About CBD Cigarettes
Legal Status
Since CBD cigarettes are made using hemp that has a THC content less than 0.3%, the smokable hemp flower wrapped in the paper is completely legal under the 2018 Farm Bill.
Despite its federal legality, states still have the power to create their own laws surrounding cannabis. As a result, some states have chosen to prohibit the production and sale of smokable hemp flower.
For example, the state of Texas has been in a back-and-forth battle with federal judges for several months over the prohibition surrounding smokable hemp.
Popularity
CBD cigarettes, or hempettes, have been gaining popularity since the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill. Although there was originally a stigma surrounding hemp that compared it to its relative, marijuana, the stigma has been slowly disappearing and allowing CBD products to have a fair chance in the market without being labeled as a drug or hoax.
Conclusion
Wild Hemp’s CBD cigarettes are definitely worthy of trying if you’re into traditional smoking (by that we mean non-vape smoke). They’re smooth, feature a nice design, and could be a very helpful tool for those looking to quit smoking tobacco.
Just keep in mind that nothing you inhale into your lungs is considered “healthy.” If you suffer from breathing problems, then you should definitely take a look at other CBD products as a remedy.
